Our Intern-to-Full-Time Employee Highlight of the Week is Emily Flatau!

Emily began her journey as an intern working in Research and Development as a Food Technician. She later returned to school for two years at NDSU to pursue additional educational opportunities. After graduation, Kenny’s had a job opportunity available, and Emily accepted it, working as a Food Technician for 12–13 years. She recently transitioned into the role of Director of Production Support at Kenny’s Candy & Confections.

One person who stood out to Emily throughout her time at KLN was Brian Miller, who served as a mentor to her. She is also grateful for the skills she developed as an intern, which allowed her to better understand what customers truly want and need. She learned how to ask the right questions to fully understand and implement the proper changes.

Emily believes it is okay to “Just Do It!” She shared, “Realizing that if you fail, it’s okay. It’s not failing, it’s learning. Not doing it is a worse decision. Focus on what you don’t know and pursue the questions of the unknown.”

Our Intern-to-Full-Time Employee Highlight of the Week is Andy Paurus!

Andy serves as the Continuous Improvement Manager at Kenny’s Candy & Confections. He started as an intern 25 years ago, working in maintenance, and was hired into a full-time maintenance role just three months later.

Andy has had a “heck of a ride” at KLN. He first started at Barrel O’ Fun and later went to school for automation. His internship position and current role are on opposite ends of the spectrum. Andy also spent three and a half years in Phoenix, AZ, where he helped build a Barrel O’ Fun plant and learned a great deal in the process.

One day, Andy was greeted by Kenny with a simple message: “Charlie’s office. 6 AM.” After that, Andy took charge of running the Perham plant, eventually becoming the maintenance supervisor and later the maintenance manager. He also spent time in Pennsylvania revamping the Waterford factory and traveled to Delano to help get a plant up and running before returning to Kenny’s.

Although Andy has held many different roles, the construction side of the business has always had his heart.
