Sometimes, the biggest move you can make is deciding to stay. At KLN Family Brands, we’ve come a long way in the past half-century. But, unlike most companies, how we measure success extends beyond a balance sheet. For us, our true value is determined by how we impact our community, our employees, and local families…generation after generation.
Darrell Nelson starts DuMor Feeds/Pine Lake Feeds where he ground and mixed feed for farmers. Soon after he would also open a hatchery.
Our story starts in a tree. When Darrell Nelson (our founder) was a boy, he suffered a fall from a tree that would have sent most young kids to the doctor. Instead, he brushed himself off and kept right on playing earning him the nickname “Tuffy”. The name stuck, and in 1964, Darrell and his son Kenny started Tuffy’s Pet Foods.
Nelson opened Kenny’s Candy & Confections in 1987. His goal? To make a better tasting, better chewing licorice than anyone else. With big dreams in hand, the team set off across the globe to learn from the best candy manufacturers, honing their skills, and purchasing the equipment they’d need to set up shop in our small hometown of Perham, MN.
