Perham Students Get a Head Start Through KLN Work-Based Learning Program
-Darren Glynn
There’s something special happening at Perham High School, and it doesn’t just take place inside the classroom.
Through the school’s internship program, students are stepping out into the working world and getting a firsthand look at potential careers — all before they toss their graduation caps in the air. One of the businesses helping make that possible is KLN Family Brands through their work-based learning program. KLN is a long-standing and respected member of the Perham community.
At KLN, work-based learning students aren’t just shadowing from the sidelines. They’re gaining real-world experience, learning workplace skills, and discovering what it takes to be part of a professional team. From understanding daily operations to building communication and problem-solving skills, these students are getting lessons you won’t always find in a textbook.
“The internship program gives me a chance to see what a career really looks like day to day,” said Miley Anderson who is currently interning in communications. Along with her supervisor, Sabrina O’Brien, Miley has been creating social media content and advertising. You may have heard Miley’s voice on the radio as she’s helping with voice overs for media ads.
Programs like internships and work-based learning are a win-win for everyone involved. Students gain valuable experience and clarity about their future goals. Employers like KLN get fresh perspectives, enthusiastic learners, and the opportunity to help shape the next generation of workers. “Miley brings fresh ideas and a positive attitude to work everyday,” says O’Brien. High school interns often bring curiosity, energy, and a willingness to learn — qualities any workplace can appreciate.
In a small town like Perham, partnerships between schools and local businesses make a big difference. They strengthen community ties and remind students that meaningful career opportunities can start right here at home.
For Perham High School students, the future isn’t some far-off idea. Thanks to programs like these, it’s already underway. ... See MoreSee Less
Our Intern-to-Full-Time Employee Highlight of the Week is Jackie Bunkowske!
Jackie is KLN's current Executive Administrator, but when she worked as an intern at KLN, you could find her in the Human Resources Department with Nancy Belka or in Accounting with Tami Kalina. Jackie spent much of her time job shadowing and filing accounting records.
Jackie moved away from Minnesota after graduating from Concordia College in Moorhead and worked jobs in Louisiana and Wisconsin, but she found her way back to Perham to be closer to family when she got married and began raising a family. "Life has a different way of working out," Jackie said.
One piece of advice Jackie would give her intern self today is to put yourself out there and make a name for yourself. Always be willing to take on anything, and don't be afraid to speak up.
Thank you, Jackie, for sharing your wise words! 😀 ... See MoreSee Less
